Is the concept of marriage out dated?

2009, has been the year of infidelity: ministers, politicians, athletes, singers, and pretty much every other type of celebrity has been exposed as having cheated on their spouse this year alone.  Is marriage as important as it used to be?  Do people value the concept of marriage as they did decades ago?  I am not saying that people have not cheated since the idea of monogamy sprouted… but it seems as if it were handled in a more civilized manner in years gone by.   The other man/woman stayed in their lane, and families were not as disposable.   It might be true that in the past women stayed with a cheating husband because they were less educated and unemployed, or maybe it was because the milkman was delivering

more than just milk… I wasn’t there, so I don’t know… LoL.

I understand that there is debate very the true meaning of separation of church and state, but if you think about it, marriage is the only religious idea which is recognized by the Federal Government….  why is that?  Why is “married” a legal status in a country where the church and state are supposed to be separate?

Going a step further, if marriage is a status which is recognized by the government, why is it not illegal to commit acts which could likely result in the termination of a marriage? Why isn’t cheating illegal since marriage is a legal status in America?

I think there is a simple answer for many of those questions… the answer is that our leaders like the benefits of having marriage as a legal status (although those legal benefits are slowly diminishing) but they also don’t want to be subject to criminal charges for cheating.  So I ask, why have two separate classes of people?  Why even bother with holding a separate legal status for those people who decide to conduct a religious ceremony to become married?

I am not saying that people should not get married, but perhaps marriage should be left to the church and not be recognized by the Government at all.  That would eliminate the debate over gay marriage, alimony, dividing property in a divorce, etc… If the Government treated all people as one class, the church could have complete control over the marriage & divorce processes, and I think that’s how it should be.  After all, what other religious rites are there Federal laws regarding??? I can’t think of any.
